Retreats and Workshops

Majestic Merino is pleased to announce the list of Retreat Workshops for 2018.
These workshops will provide a wide choice of different styles of creativity for your enjoyment and learning experience.  Accommodation will be arranged nearby at the Nornalup Riverside Chalets or other alternatives to suit the size of the group participating, for those from further afield. All workshops will be fully catered for live-in students, including a meal at the Nornabar, or you may attend on a daily basis. 
The following courses will be on offer with the dates either as shown or for future skills, as the tutors and topics are finalised. 
  • 16th to 18th February - Embroidery Basics with Gail Guthrie -  learn all the basic surface stitches to create that masterpiece or embroider that quilt, be it crazy patchwork, Candlewicking or embroidered panels. For those undertaking the Foundations One Embroiderers’ Guild Course, this satisfies the stitches required for your stitch sampler—a great ready reference for the future. $50 discount applies to Embroiderers' Guild members. 
  • 9th to 11th March - Natural Dye Mixed Media with Tracy Willans -  Create a unique artwork and a small book using locally gathered plant material to produce prints onto paper and cloth. You will be exploring several techniques for a layered effect including fabric, thread, soy milk, ink and using egg as a print medium.
  •  April 20th to 22nd: Create your own vibrant, contemporary, Mixed media art mosaics with Sudasi Jolley in this 2 day "smashing mosaics" workshop You will learn: that anyone can make mosaics and it is not difficult; about different mosaic styles; use of the tools, tile cutting and shaping by hand; how to incorporate a variety of different materials into your work; the use of different adhesives and grout; about direct and indirect mosaicing methods; simple design and colour principals
  • May 18th to 20th: Repeat Printing with Lino on Fabric with Justine Coulson  - Learn how to design a pattern that repeats seamlessly and evenly over a length of fabric. Justine will guide you through the process of drawing and perfecting a design that can be transferred to a lino block. You will then carve the block using specialised tools and print it repeatedly on a three meter piece of unbleached calico, producing a stunning piece of fabric that can be hung as a piece of wall art or later used to produce home furnishings, clothing or anything else that takes your fancy.
  • 15th to 16th June (Dates to TBC): "A Much Closer Look" - Learning the Art of Botanical Watercolour Painting with Lyn Jolley . A One Day Workshop designed to demystify using Watercolour Paintsand empower you to create with confidence - 
  • July 13th to 15th: Come along and make a flowing sleeveless top with Kaye Louwen, felting onto silk (nuno-felted) perhaps using a second-hand silk sari. This workshop is suitable for felters with some experience, and requires no stitching as seams are felted together. Participants may provide their own materials or purchase a kit with silk and wool to a chosen colour combination. Saris may be purchased on eBay or Etsy, and choices may be discussed with the tutor. Kaye is a local felter, living in Mt Barker, who has attended workshops with many world-class tutors, and has developed her own techniques for garment making.
  • Embroidery - Advanced including Surface and 3D,  Blackwork and Canvaswork, Landscape Embroidery.
