Retreats and Workshops

Majestic Merino is pleased to announce the list of Retreat Workshops for 2018.
These workshops will provide a wide choice of different styles of creativity for your enjoyment and learning experience.  The workshops take place either in the home studio of Majestic Merino or in the local community hall, depending on the facilities required for each class. Accommodation is available nearby at the Nornalup Riverside Chalets or Riverside Retreat or other alternatives to suit the size of the group participating. Morning tea is provided, all other meals are self cater. The Nornabar is open for breakfast & lunch and lunches are also available from the Tingles Bakehouse. 
The following courses will be on offer with the dates either as shown or for future skills, as the tutors and topics are finalised. PLEASE NOTE BOOKING CLOSE DATES. INSUFFICIENT BOOKINGS WILL RESULT IN THE WORKSHOP BEING CANCELLED. 
  • By Arrangement - Embroidery Basics with Gail Guthrie -  learn all the basic surface stitches to create that masterpiece or embroider that quilt, be it crazy patchwork, Candlewicking or embroidered panels. For those undertaking the Foundations One Embroiderers’ Guild Course, this satisfies the stitches required for your stitch sampler—a great ready reference for the future. $50 per session. 3 Sessions are required to do the full set of listed stitches in the 3 groups of Straight Stitches, Looped Stitches and Knots. 
  • Day classes available or choose a weekend by mutual agreement. 
  • July 13th to 15th: Come along and make a flowing sleeveless top with Kaye Louwen, felting onto silk (nuno-felted) perhaps using a second-hand silk sari. This workshop is suitable for felters with some experience, and requires no stitching as seams are felted together. Participants may provide their own materials or purchase a kit with silk and wool to a chosen colour combination. Saris may be purchased on eBay or Etsy, and choices may be discussed with the tutor. Kaye is a local felter, living in Mt Barker, who has attended workshops with many world-class tutors, and has developed her own techniques for garment making. BOOKINGS CLOSE 15th JUNE.
  • October 12th to 14th: Sketch to Stitch with Gail Guthrie - Know all these stitches but not sure where to use them or how to develop your own design. Come and learn how to take your photo or sketch from a line on a piece of paper to an embroidery with character. Embroidery Basics (learning all the basic stitches of embroidery) can also be accommodated at this course. 
  • 26th to 28th October: Rug Making with Gail Guthrie. Learn the different methods of creating rugs, pulled, latch-hooking & punch rugging and start a seat cover in one of these methods.


  •   23rd to 25th November: Stumpwork Embroidery with Gail Guthrie. Create a 3D embroidery of the Ficifolia (Red Flowering Gum).  Basic Embroidery knowledge preferred.

  • Freeform Knit & Crochet with Prudence Mapstone - May 2019
  • Have a craft you would like to learn but can't find a class, contact us and we will try to supply one. 
Minimum numbers will apply for each workshop to run.
